The BOXCAR

178th A.S.H.C. NEWSLETTER

VOLUME XXXIII
SPRING, 2000

Fellow Boxcars,

As our reunion is rapidly approaching, make sure you get all of your arrangements made, to include reservations at the hotel. To assist you with your reservation a registration form can be downloaded and printed to send to the hotel. Click here to download a PDF version (you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader), or here for the HTML version and print from your browser. If you wish to call the hotel instead of sending in the form, you may do that as well, however they do prefer you use the form.

Kandi and I are still in the process of attempting to get a chinook for a static display at Offut Air Force Base, but to date we have no confirmation that one will be there. As luck would have it the date that we had planned on have one there, is the date when the base closes in preparation for their annual open house and air show later in the month. We had been trying to get a tour set up for the base itself, and then the display of the chinook, for the 12th of August, but now it looks like it will be on the 11th instead. The only problem I ran into with the chinook coming on the 11th is the fact that the runway will be closed on that day. I contacted the airfield manager and managed to convince him that the chinook is a helicopter, and therefore would not need to use the runway. He finally saw the light and said that it should be no problem for one to come in. Now , all we need is the bird itself. The only other group activity we will be setting up is a tour of the Strategic Air Command Museum, for those of you who would be interested. It is quite a museum, with a lot of historic military aircraft there including a B-17, B-25, B-58, B-36, and a B-52 to name a few. All of the aircraft are located in one building, and the majority of them have been restored. If you are an aircraft buff, as most of us are, it is a rewarding experience. We Will set the tour up tentatively, for Friday 11th.

Since some of you had expressed interest in having an informal banquet, we went ahead and made arrangements for one on Saturday evening. The hotel was not able to give us a firm cost per person without knowing how many people would be in attendance. You will be asked if you are going to attend the banquet when you check into the hotel, so that they can get an accurate count of how many will be there. They did tell us that the cost will run between $18 to $24 per person, with a cash bar. I believe that having the banquet is a good opportunity for us all to be together at one time, to have some good food and share some good company.

We will get additional details to you as the reunion draws closer. We are looking forward to seeing you there, so please get your arrangements made soon.

Sincerely,

Joe and Kandi
